with all this gay marriage debate ponder this: Why should the government give extra benefits to only romantic partnerships? Why shouldn't I be able to enter to a partnership with a close friend/sibling/parent that gives me benefits like on taxes/social security survivorship/citizenship--all the benefits that marriage currently can give?

Question 1 and a rant
So by now everyone has probably heard the initiative to repeal gay marriage, a.k.a. "Question 1" has passed, albeit narrowly, in Maine. Now before you boycott your next (probably first) trip to Maine and board that plane to (Sweden/Norway/Denmark) just be aware that:
*Between 3 and 5 million gays and lesbians will go without health insurance this year--and next year--and the year after that. Congressional members who oppose health insurance including the public option will go unchallenged or face a poorly funded challenger next year.
*Approximately 2000 - 4000 gays and lesbians will die this year due to lack of health insurance (extrapolated numbers from a recent Harvard study).
*Based on estimates, thousands of gays and lesbians have been murdered in Iraq as a result of the destabilization of the country by the U.S. and allied forces in the past few years. Some of these murders have been horrific despite the attempts of some LGBT groups to establish safe houses in these country (sort of a gay underground railroad so to speak). Some of these houses have closed due to lack of funds despite the presence of affluent LGBT communities in Western Europe and the U.S.
But all we seem to hear about is gay marriage. Is it just a result of the media's obsession with gay marriage to the detriment of these other causes? Could it be that the power structure of the LGBT movement is decidedly more affluent and less concerned about issues that don't concern their demographic? I don't know. All I know is that to get empathy you sort of have to be able to give it. And I don't really see that right now from our community.
What do we want? GAY MARRIAGE! And when do we want it? BEFORE I FILE MY TAXES!

One of the characters in Tales Of The City once remarked that one can never have simultaneously a good apartment, a good job and a good boyfriend. The events of the past week for me confirm this to be true.

So I'm looking at my Southwest Airlines account and I have a free one-way ticket (NOT a roundtrip ticket) on Southwest that I need to use before February 8th. I'd definitely be interesting in bartering it (even selling it) for concert tickets, an old (but usable) computer for my parents, apartment in the city for the weekend or other. Obviously it's only a one-way so you'd have to buy a o/w back...but o/w tickets can be cheap these days if you look around

I'm bummed about Prop 8. And I was completely fine that Massachusettes had beat us to legalizing gay marriage in the first place....home state of the venerable Ted Kennedy.....but now I have to deal with CONNECTICUT being ahead of us now.
I don't think I'll recover.

Tickets to the Inauguration are available but only by way of your congresspersons. You don't need a ticket to go but it will get closer to the podium where Chief Justice John Roberts will swear in President Barack Obama.
For California residents send an e-mail to tickets@feinstein.senate.gov and include the following information:
1. Full name 2. Home Address 3. Contact phone number 4. e-mail address 5. # of tickets requested (website says the maximum requested is 5).
Physical tickets aren't given out. You will have to present a photo ID on Inauguration Day to get in to the 'ticketed' section.
